Garage Doors, Insulation, EV Charging, Power and Storage

Garage design near Boston: door sizes for trucks, insulation, EV chargers, workshop power, mini splits and storage. Call (617) 326-7524.

Doors, power and insulation are cheapest to plan before the walls close. Around Boston, winter decides most of these choices: how warm the garage needs to be, how the door seals, and whether a car can charge in it on a cold night.

Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide, not a quote from us. HomeGuide publishes no Boston or Massachusetts garage prices. Lot access, ledge, frost depth and snow load all move what a real job here costs. Figures read in October 2026.

What size garage door do I need for a truck?

For a full-size pickup or a tall SUV, plan a door at least 9 feet wide and 8 feet high. Common single doors are 8 or 9 feet wide by 7 feet high, and common double doors are 16 feet wide. HomeGuide lists a single door at $700 to $2,700 installed and a double at $1,000 to $3,500. Check the garage depth too: a crew-cab pickup needs more than 20 feet.

Should I insulate my garage, and what R-value?

Insulate if you will heat the garage, work in it or put a room over it. HomeGuide notes that homes in cold regions usually need thicker insulation with a higher R-value, which costs more. It lists garage insulation at $0.50 to $3.00 per square foot installed, or $800 to $5,100 for the walls and ceiling of a two-car garage. A garage turned into living space must meet the energy code for living space, and the building office sets that R-value.

Is an insulated garage door worth it in Boston?

Usually yes, if the garage is attached or heated. HomeGuide puts an insulated two-car door at $1,500 to $3,700 or more installed, against $800 to $1,800 for a non-insulated one. A good bottom seal matters as much as the panel, because snow and cold come in under the door.

How much does it cost to add an EV charger in a new garage?

A Level 2 charger with installation costs $1,200 to $3,000 by HomeGuide's EV charger page, with labor $750 to $2,000. It publishes no garage versus outdoor figure. In a new garage the cost drops when the wire is run before the walls are closed, and an indoor charger stays out of the snow.

How much power does a workshop garage need?

Most workshop garages need a subpanel of their own. HomeGuide lists a garage subpanel at $500 to $1,700 and, on its subpanel page, a 100 to 125 amp subpanel at $500 to $1,500 and a 200 amp at $800 to $2,000. Running power to a detached garage costs $10 to $25 per foot. A licensed electrician sizes the circuits for your tools and pulls the electrical permit.

Can I heat and cool a garage with a mini split?

Yes. A ductless mini split heats in winter and cools in summer, and it suits an insulated garage or a room above. HomeGuide's conversion page lists a mini split at $2,500 to $6,000 for one zone. A plain garage heater costs $400 to $2,000 installed, with electric units at $400 to $1,200 and natural gas $500 to $2,000 or more. Heat makes no sense without insulation.

Should a garage have windows and a side door?

Yes for most garages. Windows bring daylight for work and a side door lets you in without opening the big door in a snowstorm. HomeGuide lists windows for a two-car garage at $450 to $1,500 and an exterior door at $300 to $1,000. Keep windows clear of where snow piles off the roof.

How do I plan for storage, a loft or a car lift?

Plan storage and lifts in the framing. Storage trusses or a loft over the ceiling joists need to be sized to carry storage plus the roof's snow load. HomeGuide's outbuilding page says a second story or loft for storage adds $10,000 to $30,000. A car lift costs $2,500 to $5,500 and needs ceiling height, often 11 to 12 feet, and a slab thick enough for its posts. Wall racks and ceiling racks cost little and free the floor.

What does a garage door opener cost?

A garage door opener costs $300 to $900 installed by HomeGuide's opener page, with a national average of $600. Belt drives run quieter than chain drives, which matters when a bedroom sits over or beside the garage.

I would like to say they did an excellent job with our garage build. They were very prompt on getting to our home early each morning ready to work.
